Spanish companies consolidate their presence in South Africa’s renewables sector

Back

The companies Acciona, Sener and TSK bring their renewable energy technology to South Africa, where they will build a 50 MW solar thermal energy plant.

Acciona, Sener and TSK are participating in a consortium that will build the large Bokpoort solar thermal energy plant, near the city of Upington. The project will have installed capacity of 50 MW.

But these are not the only Spanish companies bringing their renewable energy technology to South Africa. At the Genera 2011 solar thermal energy trade fair, the large-scale Spanish presence in the South African Renewables Initiative (SARi) for 2011-2030 was affirmed. At the end of 2011, South Africa’s Department of Energy announced that Spain’s Abengoa would develop two solar thermal plants, with 50 MW and 100 MW of capacity, respectively. At around the same time it was announced that Iberdrola Ingeniería would build two of the 18 photovoltaic projects awarded by South African electric utility Eskom. The 18 photovoltaic projects together represent 631.53 MW of capacity, while the two awarded to Iberdrola amount to 48.25 MW each.

This commitment on the part of the South African Government, which aims to reduce the country’s dependence on oil and the use of coal for electricity production, is an opportunity for Spanish companies to develop and expand. Abengoa and Iberdrola will contribute solar thermal and photovoltaic facilities, respectively, to South Africa’s development; this falls within the country’s plan to install 18,000 MW by 2030 according to multinational Bureau Veritas, which specializes in the assessment and certification of equipment and processes.
