Corrugated cardboard packaging is the most profitable and efficient in the market

Back

In times of crisis, companies search for cost savings, but they have to be realistic and they must take into account the whole of the value chain and all of the product’s life cycle.

A recent study by COEXPHAL states that in Almería, tomato, cucumber and pepper producers could save €90 million, simply by using corrugated cardboard to package their products, since it guarantees the best price and meets the other essential characteristics offered by the leading packaging materials: protection, stability, hygiene, brand, sustainability and quality perception by the consumer.

Packaging now occupies a special position. Calculations have to be precise and every centimeter counts. For example, corrugated cardboard is the best material for making use of the space in trucks, refrigerated chambers and warehouses thanks to its versatile sizes and formats, since until it is assembled and used, it is stored in flatpacks. Corrugated cardboard packaging transports product, not air. Its logistical advantages allow transport to be optimized, with the consequent saving in fuel and CO2 emissions, and of course, cost. There are also boxes that allow printing so that the packaging itself performs the function of the “silent vendor”. And if all of that were not enough, corrugated cardboard can also drastically reduce replacement costs on distributor’s shelves (such as SRP – Shelf Ready Packaging) and the costs derived from damage during transport or storage (they protect the product and are designed to enable optimal ventilation).

Packaging is assembled automatically by machines and boxes are normally moved in the producers’ facilities by air, which makes the task of filling the boxes quick and profitable. Other packaging by contrast, has to be assembled by hand, slowing the handling process and increasing the associated costs.
