A new system for remote maintenance of industrial machinery

Three research centers and five companies in Spain are developing technology to let capital goods manufacturers offer their clients remote maintenance service for machinery.

The goal is to create technology that will allow manufacturers to offer remote maintenance service for machinery that they lease or sell to their customers. Further, the data that is collected by the manufacturers about the performance of the equipment will allow them to make better designs for future models and develop useful algorithms toward improving performance.

 

The initiative is called the ‘Promare Project’ (Proactive Maintenance of Remote Singular Machinery) and it’s aimed at capital equipment in certain industries such as milling machines for making metallic parts or high pressure processing equipment for the food industry, whose technology—also known as cold pasteurization—represents an alternative to traditional heating methods.

 

The intention is to monitor these machines remotely in order to analyze how they are operating and then apply algorithms that process data and predict possible malfunctions. One of the most important applications is to study the useful life of a machine’s components in order to change parts once a problem is detected.

 

The Promare Project is the brainchild of the Castilla y León Capital Goods Cluster (CBECyL). Research has been led by the Spanish companies Hyperbaric, Desmasa, Nicolás Correa, Ibermaq and NC Manufacturing, with the support of the University of Burgos (UBU), the Castilla y León Technological Institute (ITCL) and the Cartif Technology Center.

 

The machines have a series of sensors and computers that create databases. The Catif research lab performs the diagnostic work based on the analysis of signals received (vibrations, consumption) and by making a comparison with physical working models. Finally, the Castilla y León Technological Institute, based in Burgos, compiles the information and manages other important aspects of the project such as remote accessing.
