Research from the Stars

Mier Comunicaciones is demonstrating how local Spanish companies in the telecommunications industry can position themselves on the international stage.

Mier Comunicaciones was founded 50 years ago as a family firm in La Garriga, Barcelona. The company is a member of ProEspacio, the Spanish Association of Space Industries, through which it has accessed major European scientific projects. It specializes in designing and manufacturing on-board satellite equipment and is part of the select group of companies involved in European Space Agency (ESA) missions such as those to study climate change and to improve communications around the world. Everyday services such as weather forecasting and digital thermometers are available today thanks to these missions.

The company also develops high frequency and microwave technologies used for transmitting digital television and mobile telephone signals. Its technological solutions have played an important role in the deployment of digital TV, which now has 99% percent coverage across Spain.

Facilitating the Transition

Digital terrestrial television is the next evolution in TV signal technology, replacing analog. Digital transmission offers a number of improvements: a greater number of channels can be transmitted with higher quality sound and images, and it allows for the incorporation of interactive TV services.

Mier Comunicaciones, chaired by Pedro Mier, is a world leader in the supply of low- and medium-power digital TV broadcasting equipment. To date, it has supplied more than 25,000 pieces of equipment in more than 35 countries throughout Europe, North and South America, and Asia. For example, the company’s technology has been used in the transition from analog to digital in Norway, Finland, Denmark, and Argentina.

This transition has increased the company's business by up to 70%, and in the near future the firm is prioritizing emerging markets in Latin America and Asia Pacific.

Mier’s services cover the design, manufacturing, and construction of equipment, through to the development of networks for transmitting digital TV. The company’s engineers design systems that include transmissions, transposers, radiating and receiving systems, as well as digital radio-links and transposers for GSM telephone networks.

In the space sector, Mier Comunicaciones’ equipment can be found on board American and European commercial satellites, and the company is in the process of supplying systems to an Asian satelite that will be aloft in two years. The firm develops proprietary technology in electronics and designs and manufactures equipment for satellites for scientific research, Earth observation, telecommunications, navigation, and geo-localization.
