The unseen heart of machine tools

Many elements are vital for the creation of machine tools used in mechanical processes. These provide the unseen support for a variety of industries, from the automotive sector to nanotechnology, as well as rail, aeronautics, and energy. In Spain, the sector is made of up 60 companies, located primarily in the Basque region and in Catalonia, in northeast Spain. These companies are among the world’s leading producers in their sector, due to their technological advances and their commitment to research and innovation.

Since the Middle Ages, many accessories and tools have been necessary for the development of machine tools. When Leonardo da Vinci drew up his Codex Atlanticus in the late 15th century, it included sketches of the three different lathes, devices to shape wood or metal: a reciprocal action treadle lathe, the pedal-driven continuous action treadle lathe, and the lead screw treadle lathe with interchangeable flywheels. Despite da Vinci’s genius, he was unable to see these tools in operation because of a lack of resources and technology. The necessary tools had not yet been developed, and it was not until much later that these all became widely used.

“With technology, we can improve our products’ performance and adapt them to the applications needed by each client,” says Juan Luis Zuazuola, commercial director for Goizper, which manufacturers breaks and clutches for machine tools.

Technology plays a crucial role in the products sold by this sector. The company Neco specializes in precision cutting tools that are installed on machines such as tooling centers, lathes, and milling machines. “These are designed for industrial markets with high demand for features, precision, and performance,” explains Ignacio Esnaola, Neco’s general manager.
