New containers for smart food preservation

Back

The Technological Institute of Plastics (Aimplas) and the Ainia Technology Center are working with nanotechnology toward improving the properties of containers, lengthening and improving food preservation.

Containers that improve the oxygen barrier by 400%; materials that increase thermal properties of the preservation processes and preparation of food; natural antioxidants incorporated into the film which protects the product, improving the useful life and consumption period. These are some of the advantages brought by the work carried out with nanosensors at the Technological Institute of Plastics (Aimplas) and the Ainia Technology Center.

Behind food containers (bags, trays, tubs, etc.) lies extensive research oriented at improving food safety. Nanotechnology applied by the two Spanish organizations detects germs in the container and a new system, incorporated through nanochips, offers information to consumers about the product within. Further, this application raises the barrier to gases, keeping oxygen from passing through the material, so that the container’s properties are improved, the useful life is increased and the amount of plastic necessary in its manufacture is reduced.

In a practical demonstration carried out by container manufacturers and food companies, it was shown that an anti-microbe film increases the useful life of perishable products such as meats, fresh fish and vegetables by 20-30%. This raises the useful life on the supermarket shelf by up to two days.
